What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a natural, altered state of consciousness characterized by focused attention, heightened suggestibility, and deep relaxation. It is a trance-like state that allows individuals to access their subconscious mind more readily. This state can be achieved through the guidance of a trained hypnotherapist or through self-hypnosis techniques.

How Does Hypnosis Work?

During hypnosis, the conscious mind becomes less active, allowing the subconscious mind to come to the forefront. The subconscious mind is more open to positive suggestions and changes in behavior because it is not as critical or analytical as the conscious mind. This makes hypnosis a powerful tool for personal transformation and healing.

How We Form Beliefs in Childhood

Beliefs formed in childhood are deeply rooted in the brain's development and function.

Brain Plasticity

During childhood, the brain exhibits high plasticity, meaning it is highly adaptable and capable of forming new connections. This plasticity allows children to learn rapidly from their environment and experiences. Neural pathways that are frequently used become stronger, while those that are rarely used may weaken or disappear.

Influence of Caregivers

The interactions children have with their parents and caregivers are critical. Positive reinforcement, affection, and supportive behaviors help form positive beliefs, while neglect, criticism, or negative reinforcement can lead to limiting beliefs. The brain records these interactions and forms neural patterns based on them.

Emotional Experiences

Emotional experiences, particularly those that are intense or repetitive, strongly influence belief formation. The amygdala, which processes emotions, works closely with the hippocampus, which is involved in forming memories. Emotional experiences can create strong, lasting memories and beliefs.

Mirror Neurons

Children often learn by observing and imitating others, a process facilitated by mirror neurons. These neurons fire both when a child performs an action and when they observe someone else performing the same action, helping them internalize the behaviors and attitudes of those around them.

Cognitive Development Stages

According to developmental psychologists like Jean Piaget, children go through various stages of cognitive development. In the early stages, children are egocentric and believe that everyone sees the world as they do. As they grow, they begin to understand different perspectives and abstract concepts, which shapes their beliefs about themselves and the world.

Why Hypnotherapy Can Help with Old Beliefs

Hypnotherapy can be a powerful tool for addressing and transforming childhood beliefs due to its ability to access the subconscious mind and rewire neural pathways.

Hypnotherapy induces a state of focused relaxation, allowing access to the subconscious mind where many childhood beliefs are stored. This state bypasses the critical conscious mind, making it easier to explore and address deep-seated beliefs.

Hypnotherapy can promote neuroplasticity, the brain's ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections. By using positive suggestions and visualization, hypnotherapy helps create new, healthier neural pathways that replace old, limiting ones.

Understanding Brain Waves

Your brain operates using electrical impulses known as brain waves. These waves vary in frequency and are associated with different states of mind:

  • Beta Waves (13-30 Hz): Active thinking, problem-solving, and focus.

  • Alpha Waves (8-12 Hz): Relaxation and calmness.

  • Theta Waves (4-8 Hz): Deep relaxation, meditation, and creativity, hypnosis.

  • Delta Waves (0.5-4 Hz): Deep, restorative sleep.

Hypnotherapy helps you reach states where alpha and theta waves are dominant. These relaxed states make your mind more open to positive suggestions and changes. By accessing these brain wave patterns, hypnotherapy can effectively help you overcome challenges, reduce stress, and achieve your personal goals.

Difference Between RTT® & Hypnotherapy

Integration of Techniques

RTT is a specific method that integrates multiple therapeutic approaches, whereas hypnotherapy is a broader term that can refer to various techniques within the realm of hypnosis.

Session Structure and Duration

RTT is structured to achieve results in a very short time frame (1-3 sessions), while hypnotherapy’s duration and structure can vary depending on the issue and practitioner.

Focus on Root Causes

RTT explicitly focuses on finding and addressing the root cause of issues through regression and other techniques, whereas hypnotherapy can have a broader range of applications without necessarily delving into the root cause.

While both RTT and hypnotherapy use hypnosis as a central component, RTT is a more structured, integrative approach designed for rapid results, whereas hypnotherapy is a more general term encompassing a variety of methods and durations.
